speech therapy for Parkinson's disease
This program is effective for voice disorders directly related to Parkinson's disease. It has been estimated that nearly 90% of people with Parkinson's disease (PD) will have difficulties with their voice or speech. These problems often present in reduced volume, a hoarse-sounding voice, monotone, or slurred-sounding speech.
Often there can be a frustrating downward cycle: someone with PD feels they cannot express themselves effectively, they get frustrated and speak less, and this further weakens their capacity for oral expression. For most people, these communication problems can be improved with LSVT LOUD®.
LSVT LOUD® differs from traditional speech therapy in that it focuses on several different parameters of voice and speech at once. Research has shown that in people who complete this program, their vocal loudness improves by 90%, and 80% of these people maintain their treatment gains at 12 and 24 months post-treatment.
Angelica Gunn, , M.Ed. CCC-SLP is one of the only speech therapist in Atlanta providing LSVT LOUD® in the home. This greatly eases the burden of getting to and from a clinic near daily, and also provides privacy, and real-life settings to tackle challenges. Treatments delivered by a LSVT LOUD® clinician consist of the following:
Four LSVT LOUD®. sessions a week, for four consecutive weeks.
A thorough evaluation session prior to the 16 LSVT LOUD® visits.
Individual one-hour treatment sessions.
Daily homework practice (all 30 days of the month).
An option for maintenance session/s following completion of the program to "check in" with follow-through.
